Bill aims to limit state-level dietary supplement regulations

Across the country, millions of Americans rely on dietary supplements to support healthy lifestyles. That’s why Citizens for Health supports the recently introduced federal legislation: the Dietary Supplement Regulatory Uniformity Act.

Rep. Nick Langworthy’s bill would create consistent, nationwide standards for dietary supplements by preventing a patchwork of state-by-state regulations. Presently, supplements are federally regulated by the Food and Drug Administration under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The new uniformity act would reinforce that framework. If enacted, the bill would block states from layering their own labeling, age-restriction, or sales requirements that could supercede federal rules.

Why this effort matters

In recent years, several states have introduced or passed legislation targeting certain supplement categories. While often framed as consumer protection measures, some of these laws could limit access, create confusion at retail, and make it harder — especially for small businesses — to provide products consumers rely on every day. A patchwork system means that a supplement available in one state could be restricted or come with added burdensome rules in another, complicating online sales and interstate commerce.

The Dietary Supplement Regulatory Uniformity Act aims to protect consumer access by ensuring that safe, federally compliant supplements remain available nationwide without unnecessary barriers. By maintaining a clear federal standard, the bill would help reduce regulatory duplication, lower compliance costs, and preserve affordability for families adding supplements to their wellness routines.

Stay Informed

At Citizens for Health, we believe consumers deserve both safety and access. Strong federal oversight already exists. What we need now is regulatory clarity—not a maze of conflicting state rules that can limit choice and increase prices. This proposed legislation represents an important moment for the supplement community and for everyone who values proactive, preventive health. We encourage you to stay informed as the bill moves through the legislative process. Watch for updates, learn how decisions may affect you, and be prepared to make your voice heard.
