Citizens for Health Mourns Death of James J. Gormley, President and Senior Policy Advisor (1963-2024)

James J. Gormley

It is with great sadness that Citizens for Health announces the death of James J. Gormley, our President and Senior Policy Advisor, and principal of Gormley NPI Consulting. He was a talented and articulate voice for natural health options; a leader, a father, and a mentor and friend to many. He died unexpectedly on August 14, 2024 in Delray Beach, FL.

“James was incredibly kind and funny, and passionate about preserving access to natural health options. He was a tireless advocate for Citizens for Health. James never ceased to help us pursue a broadened local and national dialogue on behalf of everyday citizens about natural health. Having known James for many years, I will forever miss him, both personally and professionally,” said Betsy E. Lehrfeld, Secretary and Treasurer, Citizens for Health.

Leading Voice in the Natural Products Industry

An award-winning health-and-medical journalist, editor, blogger and author, James, 61, was a regular co-host of the Citizens for Health Radio Show on Building Fortunes Radio Network with Peter Mingils.

Previously, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of Better Nutrition magazine and Editorial Director of the Vitamin Retailer Magazine group. James also served as the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Officer for Nutrition 21 and attended Codex Alimentarius meetings in Paris and Rome.

“James was my former Editor turned mentor. I valued his advice and insight whenever I needed a professional sounding board. But working closely with him at Citizens for Health, I will miss his fierce devotion to consumer advocacy,” said Brenda Porter-Rockwell, Citizens for Health’s Content and Program Manager.

He frequently contributed to numerous natural products industry publications — including Nutrition Industry Executive and Vitamin Retailer magazines — and was considered an expert regarding dietary supplements and ingredients, nutritional supplement regulations and the natural products industry.

James’ sixth book, Health at Gunpoint: The FDA’s Silent War Against Health Freedom, earned him the “Excellence in Health Journalism Award” from Emord & Associates in 2014.

His five other books include the  User’s Guide to Brain-Boosting Supplements and the User’s Guide to Natural Treatments for Lyme Disease.

James received three medical blogging honors in 2010: “One of the Best Dermatology Blogs” (Plastic Surgery Practice); “Top 6 Dermatology Blogs” (Dr. Bertalan Mesko, Webicina.com); and the HAL Medical Blog Award for “Must-Read Blog in Health & Medicine.”

Between 1997 and 2001, he received multiple GAMMA awards for his health commentaries in Better Nutrition magazine from Grady College of Mass Communication & Journalism at the University of Georgia (Athens, GA).

James will be deeply missed. You can view his obituary and learn more about services online. Citizens for Health will be taking a short hiatus to remember our dear friend and colleague.

James started joining in with me on the Citizens For Health Radio Show segments on Bullding Fortunes Radio. He was always so helpful and had a vast level of experience. He stepped in when Jim Turner passed away… and James was one of the only people who could have stepped in to Jim Turner position. I am glad james wrote books and articles and these are was to memorialize his impact. His voice on the radio shows will be a way to keep him in our heads and hearts.
Sincerely, Peter Mingils
